The Conservation Commission and Dunbarton Police Department held a Walk with a Cop event at the Kimball Pond Conservation Area this week. Twenty or more people attended and enjoyed meeting police officers and a short hike on the trails.
New Trail at Bela Brook Conservation Area
There’s a new trail in the Bela Brook Conservation Area. The “Overlook Trail” begins at the public parking area at the end of Overlook Drive and connects to the rest of the Bela Brook trail network at Scipio’s cellar hole.
To find the entrance to the trail, look for the green buried utility structure with a grade stake to the right and then follow the trail markers downhill.
Maintaining a wildlife habitat opening
A five acre section of the Kimball Pond Conservation Area is being actively maintained to improve its value as habitat for birds and animals. Two old fields were logged, then treated to control invasive plants. Tree stumps were ground to allow for annual brush hogging.
The result is an area with a mix of wooded edge, brush and open(ish) grassland.
